With the set up of James Walsh Studio, based in the heart of Somerset, Bath, James now commands a multi-disciplinary Design Studio and Consultancy. James still essentially designs gardens but now with each project, the aim is to create something truly unique and extraordinary. Whilst designing landscapes and gardens for private properties, James works very closely with their clients, their architects, and interior designers – his goal: to create an emotional connection between the clients and their gardens. Drawing on his many years experience and collaborating with a multitude of creative contacts in the field, all designs are individually tailored to the needs of the client as well as the specific site. Each project is coordinated by James himself from the start to completion including design, landscape construction as well as sourcing all trees and plants and the planting works itself.
James specialises in city landscapes. He draws from his vast experience working in challenging gardens in London, where space is not only at a premium but access sometimes impossible, yet expectations remain extremely high. Fusing British craftsmanship, collaborating between many different fields, and bound by experimentation and originality, James’ goal is to develop, explore, design and create exceptional landscapes.
With a passion for gardens and horticulture, as well as food, cooking, design and travel – James explores the contrasting relationships between indoor and outdoor juxtapositions, simplicity vs complexity, formal vs informal, architecture vs landscape. His designs can often be characterised by signature specimen trees taking centre stage. From supplying and planting large, mature trees to designing and building bespoke furniture and pergolas to creating that extra special space for entertaining, James offers the complete package.
With every project unique, James has a very ‘hands on’ approach. Tuning into the construction process itself, James gets completely involved from the beginning making sure individual touches are added at every stage, with authentic attention to detail. With the Designer/ Master Craftsman approach to each and every project, and with organic tweaks along the way, James believes the transformation leading to the end results are worth it every step of the way – hard and soft landscaping blending seamlessly to create genuinely stunning landscapes.
